STN MTN / Kauai is the combined release of the seventh mixtape and second extended play (EP) by American recording artist Childish Gambino. The STN MTN mixtape was released on October 2, 2014 as a free download from DatPiff, while the Kauai EP was made available the following day through online music stores by Glassnote Records. They are each considered dual sides of a concept album that are unified by a cohesive story line, and come ten months after Glover's second studio album, Because the Internet.[1]

Producers who contributed to the mixtape include Donald Glover himself, as well as Nick Banga, Big Soj, Ludwig Göransson, Chris Hartz, Tim Suby, and Zaytoven.
On October 5, 2014, fans on Reddit discovered a hidden a cappella verse on one of Donald Glover's websites. It was confirmed by Gambino that the verse syncs up with the instrumental portion of 'V. 3005 (Beach Picnic Version)'.[2]

STN MTN is a concept mixtape where Glover is asleep dreaming he 'ran Atlanta', with songs based off modern day southern hip hop. The mixtape ends with Glover awaking from this dream on the Hawaiian island, Kauai. Kauai is a concept EP. Unlike STN MTN, Kauai focuses on themes such as love, nostalgia and passion, using alternative R&B. A song from the EP Kauai, 'Retro [Rough]', is based on Gambino's earlier song, 'Love Is Crazy' featuring Eugene Cordero, from his mixtape Sick Boi.[4]

STN MTN / Kauai has received generally positive reviews. DJ Booth gave the project a 4.7/5 stars, calling it 'a cohesive project.. it's Gambino so there will be at least some depth to make a follow up review worth while.' Zach Dionne of Complex gave a positive review saying that 'In a couple songs, he flies us there, thousands of miles away from Atlanta, to see for ourselves.'
Commercial performance[edit]
Kauai debuted at number 18 on the Billboard 200, selling 16,000 copies in its first week.[12] In its second week, the EP rose to number 16 on the chart, selling 19,000 copies, bringing its two-week total to 35,000 copies.[13] In its third week, the EP dropped down to number 46 on the chart, selling 7,000 copies, bringing the total album sales to 42,000 copies in the United States.[14]

Childish Gambino has confirmed the album title and also revealed the artwork via social media. It is still not confirmed whether it will release on December 2nd.
Previous story (Nov. 7): Childish Gambino fans have been waiting for new music forever now but he seems more focused on his hit TV show Atlanta at the moment.
The drought may still be over as the actor/rapper is reportedly releasing a new album titled Awaken, My Love! on December 2nd. A user on Reddit discovered the new album listing on All Music which also mentioned the release date.

Upon further investigation, we found out that the album is also available for pre-order on Amazon UK with Glassnote as the label, as we would expect. There is no official word on the album yet and that isn’t surprising since the new norm is to keep things under wraps till very late.
Donald Glover hasn’t released new music in a long time, except for the little tease of a new song he did on episode 5 of Atlanta back in September. If Awaken, My Love! is indeed the title, that would also mean that Pharos was a name solely for the camping event he organised at the Joshua Tree National Park in California in first week of September.

Whether doing standup, acting on TV and in movies, or performing his off-kilter hip-hop and funk under the name Childish Gambino, it's impossible not to be impressed by Donald Glover's talents.He got his start performing with the sketch group Derrick Comedy, which led to him being hired by Tina Fey in 2006 to write for 30 Rock. Three years later he left that job to move to Los Angeles and was soon cast on the sitcom Community. He had released his first mixtape, Sick Boi, the previous year, using a name, Childish Gambino, he'd been given by an on-line Wu-Tang Clan name generator. His next mixtape, Poindexter, was released on September 19, 2009, the same day Community premiered on NBC. While his brainy, sometimes goofy rapping style was established by these two mixtapes, his next efforts sought to expand his reach and touch on more serious subjects. I AM JUST A RAPPER and I AM JUST A RAPPER 2 were released in quick succession at the beginning of 2010; then a couple months later he released Culdesac, a mixtape that showed off his soulful singing style. All the while he was still starring on Community, launching a successful standup comedy career, and making electronic music under the name mcDJ. To this point all his music had been self-released, but that changed when he was signed to Glassnote Records in 2011. His first official album, Camp, was issued that same year. Busy as ever, Glover launched a tour that lasted into 2012, then released another mixtape, Royalty, denoting his new status as a more serious rapper and featuring a range of musicians including Beck, ScHoolboy Q, and Das Racist's Heems.Along with guesting on tracks by Kilo Kish, Chance the Rapper, Young Dro, and Kenna, his next move was to reduce his commitment to Community in order to focus more on his music and other projects, most notably a production deal with the TBS network. He left the show for good in 2013, and that same year released his second album, Because the Internet. The record featured appearances by Chance the Rapper, Jhené Aiko, and Azealia Banks, and scored Childish Gambino a Top Ten debut chart placement, a gold record, and a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 2015 Grammy Awards. Glover kept up the same determined pace he always had, and in 2015 released a new mixtape, STN MTN, and EP, Kauai, both of which showed him expanding his sound, with the latter featuring more singing than before. His next big project was creating and starring in Atlanta, a well-received comedic drama set in the titular city. It debuted in September of 2016 and was an instant commercial success. Around this same time, Glover began dropping hints about a new album, played a festival in California where he played many new songs, and in November debuted the first single, 'Me and Your Mama.' It was a new sound cooked up by Glover and longtime producer Ludwig Göransson, based on deeply weird late-'60s and early-'70s psychedelic funk and soul like Sly & the Family Stone and Funkadelic. 'Awaken, My Love!', which came out in December of 2016, featured Glover forgoing his trademark rap style completely and instead stretching his vocal range in a variety of styles.
