Windows Mobile 5.0, originally codenamed 'Magneto',[2] was released at Microsoft's Mobile and Embedded Developers Conference 2005 in Las Vegas, May 9–12, 2005. Microsoft offered mainstream support for Windows Mobile 5 through October 12, 2010, and extended support through October 13, 2015.[3] It was first offered on the Dell Axim x51. It used the .NET Compact Framework 1.0 SP3, an environment for programs based on .NET.Windows Mobile 5.0 included Microsoft Exchange Server 'push' functionality improvements that worked with Exchange 2003 SP2.[4] The 'push' functionality also required vendor/device support[5] With AKU2 software upgrades all WM 5.0 devices supported DirectPush.This version featured increased battery life due to Persistent storage capability. Previously up to 50% (enough for 72 hours of storage) of battery power was reserved just to maintain data in volatile RAM. This continued the trend of Windows-based devices moving from using RAM as their primary storage medium to the use of a combination of RAM and flash memory (in use, no distinction between the two is obvious to users). Programs and frequently accessed data run in RAM, while most storage is in the flash memory. The OS seamlessly moves data between the two as needed. Everything is backed up in the flash memory, so unlike prior devices, WM5 devices lose no data if power is lost. New to 5.0, OS updates were released as Adaptation kit upgrades, with AKU 3.5 being the final released.
A new version of Office was bundled called 'Microsoft Office Mobile' which includes PowerPoint Mobile, Excel Mobile with graphing capability and Word Mobile with the ability to insert tables and graphics. Media management and playback was enhanced with Picture and Video package, which converged the management of videos and pictures and Windows Media Player 10 Mobile. Among new hardware features were enhanced Bluetooth support, default QWERTY keyboard-support and a management interface for Global Positioning System (GPS). Improvements were made to ActiveSync 4.2 with 15% increased synchronization speed. Business customers benefited from a new error reporting facility similar to that present in desktop and server Windows systems. Caller ID now supports photos so a user can apply an image to each contact to show when a call is received. DirectShow was also natively added. This release was the first to include DirectDraw with hardware acceleration, replacing the deprecated graphics component of GAPI, and Pocket MSN can be viewed directly from the Today Screen.
Windows Mobile 5.0 requires at least 64MB of RAM, and the device must run an ARM compatible processor such as the Intel XScale or the Samsung and Texas Instruments ARM compatibles.[6]

This section is here primarily to answer your questions on the ROM upgrade. We post all the information that we receive regarding the upgrade here on this site. We cannot provide information on the location's of ROM upgrades in country's that are not specified at the bottom of this article. Please do not ask us if we know where you can purchase upgrades. All the information we have available have is posted here on this page.

What is the ROM Upgrade?
The CE 2 ROM Chip upgrades the H/PC operating system from Windows CE 1.0x to Windows CE 2.0.
Windows CE 1 was short lived. By the time most OEM's were fluently rolling out CE 1.0x devices, Microsoft had released Windows CE 2. Some OEM's offered the upgrade for free*, to existing customers, as well as creating new hardware devices with native support for the new platform.
The majority of the new generation of devices contained faster processors and double the memory capacity of its predecessors.
H/PC Manufacturers which made ROM Upgrades available for their CE 1.0x devices included hp, Casio, Compaq, NEC and Philips.

Should I upgrade my device?
The answer to that is Yes. Unless you can afford to buy a new H/PC, or update to a newer model this is the best course of action for all Windows CE 1.0x users. Updating the ROM module will provide added support and functionality for the device, far surpassing the abilities of Windows CE 1.
Updating to Windows CE 2 will allow you to install and use a wider range of hardware and software applications by many different developers. You will find that obtaining software for your device is easier as there are more developers for the platform. There are very few developers still writing for Windows CE 1.
Having CE 2 will also allow you to upgrade your host PC to a newer operating system than Windows 95 or NT 4.0. Windows 98, Millennium, 2000, XP and 2003 are fully supported with some additional, free software as are Office 97 (Windows 98 - 2000 only), 2000, XP and 2003. With CE 2, using third party software you can also connect to non Microsoft Operating Systems and Office Productivity suites on your host PC.
Finally the OS and security enhancements that come with CE 2 complete the package.
What do I get with the ROM Upgrade?
The contents of the Windows CE 2.0 ROM Upgrade depend largely on the features offered by the device OEM. While the core operating system is universal, the installed software can vary. For example not all devices will have Pocket PowerPoint or Voice Recorder. OEM's may also add their own, or third party applications to the ROM chip
